The Iditarod Alaskan dogsled race begins in less than a month and involves mushers who race 1000+ miles across the Alaskan wilderness. We love watching and supporting these fearless athletes. Over the past couple of years, we've had the opportunity to interact with several mushers, including GB Jones and Charley Benja. Mr. Jones even sent our students "booties" that were actually worn by dogs while on the Iditarod trail. Students in 3V and 3S made blankets to be used by dogs at the checkpoints. Just last week, the Seavey dog kennel has tweeted a "good luck" message to our students. Maybe that's one of the reasons I love following the Iditarod. Over and over, we have been able to study, watch, learn and interact with these athletes. They're real. They care. They connect. They demonstrate how to work hard to meet your goals.
In trying to catch the Iditarod spirit, we are again kicking off our annual IditaREAD program. Students in grades 3-6 are strongly encouraged to read 1000 minutes over the next six weeks. Our main purpose is to continue to promote and support students' self selected reading outside of the school day. Students pick up a reading log and paper dog. As they read and fill out their reading log, they progress to the various checkpoints listed on the log. They will then come into the library to move their 'dog' to new locations along the IditaREAD trail. Already, we have dogs traveling all around the room.
Hopewell students, enjoy the IditaREAD ride. You're off to a great start!
