When we came back to school after winter break, we had missed two days of school due to crazy cold weather. Hopewell students don't miss a beat, though. They are busy. Busy getting ready for Mac Barnett's visit in March. Since our return, all students at Hopewell have heard multiple Mac Barnett books, including: Guess Who, Chloe and the Lion, Count the Monkeys and Mustache. They have watched short videos of Mac talking about his Brixon Brothers series and also interacting with illustrator Adam Rex. Sixth graders are marketing Mr. Barnett's work to accomplish multiple goals: educating others about his work, creating enthusiasm for his visit, making sure he will feel welcome upon his arrival and continuing to cultivate our culture of readers.
I do want to express how extremely grateful I am that the Pleasant Valley School district and our PTA support full day author visits for all of our elementary buildings. What a beautiful gift! Also it is sheer joy to watch children come to know and recognize an author's work and style. So many times over the past 2 weeks, I've watched children laughing hysterically as they 'get' the humor in Mr. Barnett's conversational interview or in his work. They love it! We cannot wait to meet Mac Barnett and spend the day with him
